Mike grew up mostly in what is now North Charleston, graduating from Garrett High School at age 16, and has lived in Summerville the last three decades. He showed his leadership and responsibility at an early age as President of his senior class and an Eagle scout who earned the Order of the Arrow.
The first person in his family to attend college, Mike is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, New York University School of Law and Harvard Business School.
Upon graduation from the Air Force Academy, he served as an officer in the United States Air Force and attained the rank of Major in the United States Air Force Reserve.
An attorney and businessman, Mike served as State Senator from 1988 to 1997. Mike has been active in the Republican Party serving in various positions at the county and district levels.
In 1986, with South Carolina farmers facing a terrible drought, Mike garnered national recognition for his Adopt-A-Cow program that distributed seed and hay to farmers to help rescue their herds.
Mike and his wife, Vivian, have two children and three grandchildren.
